Philosophy for Children P4C

p4c

What is it?

It is well documented that P4C has an impact on children's cognitive, social and emotional development. P4C is about getting children to think and communicate well; to think better for themselves.

Why teach thinking?

  • Learning how to learn is the key to lifelong learning.
  • Thinking is needed for a healthy society – being reasonable – able to reason!
  • Thinking helps all other aspects of life.

How does it work?

P4c lessons follow a basic structure which supports the children's ability to develop and deepen their thinking.

  1. They are shown a stimulus, such as a story book, short film or piece of art.
  2. They identify concepts within the stimulus
  3. They form philosophical questions from these concepts
  4. As a community they decide upon their preferred question
  5. They hold an enquiry/discussion
  6. They are given the opportunity to reflect on their thoughts
